“People do not give credence that a fourteen-year-old girl could leave home and go off in the wintertime to avenge her father's blood but it did not seem so strange then, although I will say it did not happen every day.”

Mattie Ross
narrator and protagonist in Charles Portis's True Grit

Readers are invited to journey to the Choctaw Nation of the late 19th Century as Oklahoma reads Charles Portis's classic novel of revenge, True Grit. Libraries throughout the state are invited to host programs and activities throughout 2014, marking the state's first One Book program since the Centennial Oklahoma Reads Oklahoma celebration.

New! Stillwater joins the fun in 2015!

True Grit is an ideal Oklahoma read. Much of the action takes place in Indian Territory—specifically the Choctaw Nation—and Oklahoma’s public libraries report that western literature remains a popular genre with Sooner State readers. The quest for justice, the adventure in a lawless frontier, and the unique and compelling characters come together to make this novel a classic of American Literature—one that has been enjoyed by readers of all ages.

For libraries planning events around True Grit, the book inspires a variety of ideas. This site will provide libraries with programming ideas, information on funding opportunities, and other resources to promote local activities and to invite readers to join in.

For those who already know and love the book, Oklahoma Reads True Grit is an opportunity to become reacquainted with old friends.

We hope this One Book program (and this site) inspires you to delve further into one of the most beloved of American novels.
